Each UCSF affiliated hospital hosts a clinical ethics consultation service. The best way to request a consult is listed below:

UCSF Parnassus & Mission Bay Hospitals Clinical Ethics Consultation

Any member of the patient care team (including the patient or patient surrogate decision-maker) may request an ethics consult by calling the UCSF Medical Center Operator at 415-476-1000 and requesting that the Ethics Consultation Service be paged.

UCSF Medical Center maintains a multi-disciplinary Ethics Committee composed of physicians, nurses, medical ethicists, a legal consultant and representatives from the Spiritual Care Services, the Social Services department, and other departments as appropriate for the evolving needs of the Medical Center and its patients. The Committee meets regularly to (1) identify and discuss issues involving medical ethics and report its activities to the President of the Medical Staff, (2) educate its members and the hospital community on issues relating to medical ethics, and (3) convene consultations to assist in the resolution of clinical ethical dilemmas.

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Clinical Ethics Consultation

Any member of the patient care team (including the patient or patient surrogate decision-maker) may request an ethics consult by calling the hospital operator at 510-428-3000 and requesting that the Ethics Consultation Service be paged.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Ethics Consultation

Patients and staff at ZSFG can request an ethics consult by contacting the Medical Staff services office (415-206-6360) during business hours, or by contacting the AOD (Administrator-On-Duty/Nursing Supervisor) during non-business hours (628-206-3519). These contacts will then contact the Ethics Committee Members who are taking consults.

San Francisco VA Medical Center Ethics Consultation

Any patient, staff, faculty or trainee can initiate a clinical ethics consult. Ethics consults can be obtained at the San Francisco VA by calling 415-379-5551 (2-5551 from within the VA). Please leave a message with your name, contact information and a brief description of the question. An ethics team member will return your call within normal business hours.

UCSF Bioethics offers a free research ethics consultation service through the UCSF Clinical & Translational Science Institute.

The UCSF Office of Ethics & Compliance manages potential ethics violations, in addition to Conflict of Interest issues and regulatory advice.
