Winston Chiong Appointed as Interim Director

Dear UCSF Bioethics Community,

As many of you know, Barbara Koenig, PhD, who founded and has led UCSF Bioethics since 2016, retired from her full-time position and took emeritus status in July 2021. Following deliberation by campus leadership, with input from a wide range of faculty, we are thrilled to announce that Winston Chiong, MD, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology, will serve as interim Director of UCSF Bioethics.

A neurologist and neuroethicist, Winston conducts research on both the neuroscience of decision-making in the aging brain and the ethics and policy implications of alterations to brain function. Dr. Chiong received his MD from UCSF and his PhD in Philosophy from New York University; he currently serves on the Neuroethics Working Group of the NIH BRAIN Initiative, the American Academy of Neurology’s Ethics, Law and Humanities Committee, the UCSF Medical Center Ethics Committee and the UCSF Department of Neurology Diversity Committee.

As interim Director of UCSF Bioethics, Dr. Chiong will assume leadership of the Program’s educational and service initiatives at UCSF and work to grow our intellectual community and prominence.
