Invitation: Please join us for the April session of the Clinical Ethics Journal Club featuring Dr. Janet Shim. The selected readings are two chapters from the book, Bioethical Responsibilities in Twenty-First Century Crises, which argues for an expanded role and scope for the field of bioethics to address structural inequities, climate change, and justice. It emphasizes addressing disability, incarceration, and the emotional, time-sensitive nature of modern crises, updating tools to address 21st-century injustices. We will read Chapter 1 by Lanphier & Churchill, and Chapter 1 by Lisa Parker on Bioethics in the Current Climate. You can find both of these files via our publicly accessible Box folder journal club.

Paper: Lanphier, E., & Churchill, L. R. (Eds.). (2026). Bioethical responsibilities in twenty-first century crises. Bloomsbury Publishing. Hard copy available here.

Speaker: Dr. Janet Shim is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at UCSF. My program of research focuses on two areas: the sociological analysis of health sciences, particularly how they understand social difference and health inequality, and the study of healthcare interactions and how they produce unequal outcomes. More specifically, she works on studies that examine how safety net healthcare institutions can provide care to marginalized populations, and how mandates for diversity and inclusion are shaping research practices. Her work has been funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. She is a co-editor of Biomedicalization: Technoscience, Health, and Illness in the U.S. (Duke University Press, 2010) and the author of Heart-Sick: The Politics of Risk, Inequality, and Heart Disease (New York University Press, 2014).

Clinical Ethics Journal Club is generally held by Zoom on the fourth Thursday of the month from 4:00-5:00 pm PT. Eligible attendees may receive CME credit. If you are interested in presenting, reach out to [email protected].

An archive of past journal clubs and their papers are available here.
